Antlion Audio ModMic Uni 2+ Microphone Review – Wired For Game And Vocal Beauty
Antlion Audio ModMic Uni 2+ is a $65 USD microphone designed to be attached to a pair of headphones, with an upgraded mic capsule and a 3.5mm jack connector, ideal for PC computer users. Today we review the ModMic Uni 2+ and see how it performs as a portable microphone that you can attach to your headphones.

Introduction
Antlion Audio is a kind company, I already wronged them twice – I named them Antilon instead of Antlion, and I also managed to break a product from them I reviewed previously, the Antlion Kimura Duo, which the company was kind enough to replace for me. Overall, this is excellent and I am happy to be reviewing a product from Antlion and for the service they offer. Their products are available for purchase through multiple electronics channels, including Amazon.

Huge thanks to Antlion Audio for providing the sample for this review, in exchange for my honest opinion.

Build Quality – Design – Subjective Usage
Antlion Audio ModMic Uni 2+ is the culmination of over a decade of attachable microphones designed by Antlion. This one is uni-directional, noise canceling and it has been upgraded for better sonic quality. The 3.5mm aux termination is the most flexible for computer users, allowing you to plug into most computers, laptops, and even interface users. The new 2+ model includes a new advanced adhesive and manufacturing improvements.

With a 2-year warranty that is always honored, AntLion is exceptional, and they offer a return window of 30 days, although it really isn’t necessary for the 65USD microphone we’re reviewing. Uni 2+ can be attached to anything, including VR headsets, random flat surfaces, and all headphones you can imagine, maybe except for the HIFIMAN Unveiled series including Arya Unveiled, HE1000 Unveiled or Susvara Unveiled. The patented magnetic clasp system makes it easy to remove the mic from the current setup.

You can mute the microphone easily using the button on the mic, and this is always accessible regardless whether you’re using a dedicated app or in a game. ModMic Uni2 + will work with any device that uses a 3.5mm input for the microphone, and Antlion Audio has a wide selection of accessories that adds compatibility for other consoles including for XLR interfaces and USB adapters.

Technically, Antlion Audio ModMic Uni 2+ has a SNR of 70 dB, a SPL of -36dB, and an impedance of 2.2 kOhms. The recording pattern is uni-directional and max SPL is 110dB, with a standard operating voltage of 3.0Vdc and an operation range of 1 to 10 Vdc. ModMic Uni2 Plus is an easy to use microphone, you just click it into your desired setup, and that’s it, it works.
Sound Quality
Pairings – You can use Antilon Audio ModMic Uni2+ with most interfaces, including Burson PlayMate 2 and Burson PlayMate 3. I have also tested it with Fosi Audio K7 which has a microphone input. It generally works well with all mic inputs, but although Antilon Audio makes a USB Mic Interface adapter, you have to purchase that separately as it is not part of the official ModMic Uni2+ package.

Overall Signature – I believe that ModMic Uni2+ is one of the most natural and crystalline sounding microphones for PC you can purchase. Sound is really controlled, you can actually scream into it a bit and it won’t distort. Recording pattern is from out and inside of the orientation, so not from the tip of the microphone. If you remove the foam protection or don’t apply it at all, you will see where the capsule is and it will make sense.

Overall, sound reproduces both my voice and my wife’s a bit better than Rode NTG-3B, which is my reference microphone that I use while recording video content for our youtube channel. Sensitivity of the ModMic Uni2+ is rather low though, so although it does record my voice accurately, it has to be really close to my mouth for it to work. This means that it is less practical for broadcast unless you can keep it on your face and glued to your headphones. I personally feel like it is an excellent add-on for gaming, or for talking, be it business and work or just casual online hangrounds, like DnD matches, Dota2, or other games, or just hanging around and working on personal or artistic projects.

ModMic Uni2+ stays glued nicely to headphones without feeling forced, but I feel like the cable is a bit short, my PC is a bit far from my desk, and to really work well, I would’ve needed the ModMoc Uni2+ to have at least half a meter to one meter extra cable. Happily, because it uses a standard cable connector, it is very easy to plug an extension into the microphone input of my computer. It works well for all audio interfaces, has zero self noise, doesn’t add anything to your sound unless it is supposed to, and

Dynamic Range And Textures – To properly test the texture and dynamic range, you have to go deep into your windows PC settings, because you have to find the current board you’re using for your microphone. To actually hear what you’re recording, you have to go to properties then to enable listen and playback through the default playback device. Now, important for textures and dynamic range, you have to go to Levels and set the microphone volume to 100 and Microphone Boost to 0 dB. This is because otherwise, the microphone boost option adds a lot of echo and grainy texture to your microphone.

Now, with all the correct settings, ModMic Uni 2+ sounds crystalline, smooth and the sound produced is perfectly natural. I can hear my wife’s beautiful voice while she’s singing, and the capsule used by Antlion Audio is insanely good, it is in line with what you can get from an SM85 in sonic quality, although not in actual volume handling, as you can scream much louder in an SM85, but it is brilliant. Dynamic range is also insane, as Uni 2 + can reproduce the full width of a whisper and a scream, without compressing the voice to a certain volume. All in all, I love its performance, it has a good echo rejection if you use it without the microphone boost, and if you ever have to play an online game or do anything where your friends have to hear you, it will produce some of the most crisp, most detailed signatures you have ever heard.
Value and Conclusion
Like most Antlion products, ModMic Uni 2 has a very low price but excellent performance, it is brilliant. The package does not come with many addons, like a much needed USB to mic interface, but chances are that if you own a laptop or PC computer, you’ll already have all that you need to run it.

At the end of the day, ModMic Uni 2 + sounds brilliant, it is easy to use, can create a beautiful voicing, sounds professional, picks up your voice really well, has enough gain and volume to be practical but doesn’t go overboard. A little interface would do even better, but it can be used straight away by plugging it into your laptop or Pc computer.
